We had a great time visiting grandma and papa Jack during a last-minute decision to venture to Traverse City over the 4th. The weather was going to be unbearable down south in the high 90s, so we booked for cooler temps and water! So much for cooler temps, it was blistering hot even in the high 80s - even near the water.
We survived and loved every minute. Well, almost every minute.
First we headed to the Elks Club to hunker down on some blankets with the Mumma family to watch the air show. It was really cool and the kids enjoyed it - at least for a little while. The Blue Angels were, again, the highlight. They're simply amazing. Jack was telling us there are only about 9-10 Blue Angel pilots and they retire them quickly, within a few years. I believe it - they are the best of the best!
John and I headed back to town with Jack for the Cherry Festival the next day. We enjoyed brunch at Hannah then made our way through the streets in the searing sun. Art fairs, carnival, air show - there was so much to do, but we pooped out quickly because 92, sunny and humid wasn't doing it for us. We found a fountain and took refuge in a fudge shoppe for a bit, then headed back to Buckley.
Jack fell asleep as soon as we put him in the car seat. Much to our surprise, we had an amazing 360-view of the Blue Angels from the top of the parking deck. It was chilling to see them fly by so closely. And having the ability to see their full route was really cool! Um, if it weren't 115 degrees on top of the structure, we might have stayed even longer.
We took Jack home for a nap and etched out a plan to head to the beach after his nap. We were going to go to a nearby lake and instead decided to enjoy our secret beach and dinner at Art's in Glen Arbor. It was a 35-40 minute drive, but worth every second.
It was still sizzling hot at nearly 6 p.m. on the beach. The sand was piping hot on our feet as we scrambled to take a seat near the water. Ahh! The water actually felt great instead of icy cold. It was perfect! There were really strong winds, but that somehow felt great too. As long as you stayed near the water, the sand wouldn't blast off your skin. It wasn't that bad, but let's just say you wouldn't enjoy a picnic on the beach today. We ran through the surf and enjoyed ocean-like waves with no salty aftertaste. Even better, we walked over to a river that met Lake Michigan. It was like bathwater and shallow enough for Jack to sit in, so extremely enjoyable!
We could have stayed for hours, but soon took off to grab some dinner at Art's. Before jumping in the car we dunked our feet in buckets of water brought from the lake. Everyone cleaned up pretty well by the time we got to Art's.
Jack enjoyed long walks with grandma and Smokey and he liked her new kitty, Smudge. He also thought papa Jack's motorcycle and swing was super! The shots at the end are of their beautiful front yard.
All in, it was a great trip. Had we left before or after the 4th of July traffic, it'd have been near perfect. Oh, and if we hadn't stopped at Birch Run. It was awful.
Keep forgetting to mention No. 2. I'm 5 months pregnant in these pictures and it shows! But only because I've been eating naughty food. I've gained 20 pounds. Uh-oh! Everything is great. I had a little nauseousness in the first trimester, but now everything's cool. But the headaches. I get those a lot. But it's all good!
